Alexander Emmanuel “Alex” Rodriguez (born July 27, 1975) is an American baseball third baseman with the New York Yankees of Major League Baseball. Known popularly by his nickname A-Rod, he previously played shortstop for the Seattle Mariners and the Texas Rangers. Rodriguez is considered one of the best all-around baseball players of all time. He is the youngest player ever to hit 500 home runs, breaking the record Jimmie Foxx set in 1939, and the youngest to hit 600, besting Babe Ruth’s record by over a year. Rodriguez has fourteen 100-RBI seasons in his career, more than any player in history. On September 24, 2010, Rodriguez hit two home runs, surpassing Sammy Sosa’s mark of 609 HRs, and became the all-time leader in home runs by a player of Hispanic descent

David Lee, formerly of the New York Knicks and now playing for the Golden State Warriors, is one of the most productive power forwards playing in the NBA. He was drafted by the Knicks out of the University of Florida in 2005, and enjoyed great popularity playing in New York. Lee made the All-Star team in 2010, and in that season Lee recorded the first triple-double of his career, putting up 37 points, 20 rebounds, and 10 assists against the Golden State Warriors – the team to which he was later traded. Since being traded, Lee has averaged a double-double for the resurgent Warriors.

Nicknamed “The Truth”, Paul Pierce, has played for the Boston Celtics for his entire career. Pierce was a first-team All-American after his junior season with the Kansas Jayhawks, and was the 10th overall pick in the 1998 NBA Draft. He has continued to excel as a member of the Celtics, becoming a nine-time All-Star, four-time All-NBA team selection and also leading Boston to the NBA Finals in 2008 and in 2010. In 2008 the Celtics won the 2008 NBA Finals, and Pierce was named the 2008 NBA Finals MVP. Pierce also is one of only three Celtics, alongside Larry Bird and John Havlicek, who have scored over 20,000 points in their career with the Celtics alone.

He’s jovial demeanor certainly helps with his popularity, but he is mostly popular for being one of the shortest players in the NBA at 5’9″. Amare Stoudemire was taken as the #9 pick of the 2002 draft by the Phoenix Suns, and was the only high school player taken in the draft that year. It ended up being an excellent pick, as Stoudemire won the NBA Rookie of the Year Award in 2003 and has made six appearances in the NBA All-Star Game. Possessing a rare combination of size and athletic ability, Stoudemire has the quickness to score against players his size or larger, but can easily over power players small that him.

Kevin Garnett is one of the most well-known players in the NBA, having been in the league since being drafted out of high school by the Minnesota Timberwolves in 1995. He was the first player drafted out of high school since 1975, and ushered in an era of high school players moving straight to the NBA. While playing for the Timberwolves Garnett became a dominant force in the NBA, but he was never able to lead them to an NBA Championship. He was ultimately traded to the Boston Celtics, and won an NBA Championship in his first year with the Celtics in 2008.
