Alexander Emmanuel “Alex” Rodriguez (born July 27, 1975) is an American baseball third baseman with the New York Yankees of Major League Baseball. Known popularly by his nickname A-Rod, he previously played shortstop for the Seattle Mariners and the Texas Rangers. Rodriguez is considered one of the best all-around baseball players of all time. He is the youngest player ever to hit 500 home runs, breaking the record Jimmie Foxx set in 1939, and the youngest to hit 600, besting Babe Ruth’s record by over a year. Rodriguez has fourteen 100-RBI seasons in his career, more than any player in history. On September 24, 2010, Rodriguez hit two home runs, surpassing Sammy Sosa’s mark of 609 HRs, and became the all-time leader in home runs by a player of Hispanic descent

David Lee, formerly of the New York Knicks and now playing for the Golden State Warriors, is one of the most productive power forwards playing in the NBA. He was drafted by the Knicks out of the University of Florida in 2005, and enjoyed great popularity playing in New York. Lee made the All-Star team in 2010, and in that season Lee recorded the first triple-double of his career, putting up 37 points, 20 rebounds, and 10 assists against the Golden State Warriors – the team to which he was later traded. Since being traded, Lee has averaged a double-double for the resurgent Warriors.

Nicknamed “The Truth”, Paul Pierce, has played for the Boston Celtics for his entire career. Pierce was a first-team All-American after his junior season with the Kansas Jayhawks, and was the 10th overall pick in the 1998 NBA Draft. He has continued to excel as a member of the Celtics, becoming a nine-time All-Star, four-time All-NBA team selection and also leading Boston to the NBA Finals in 2008 and in 2010. In 2008 the Celtics won the 2008 NBA Finals, and Pierce was named the 2008 NBA Finals MVP. Pierce also is one of only three Celtics, alongside Larry Bird and John Havlicek, who have scored over 20,000 points in their career with the Celtics alone.

Nate Robinson is an extremely popular NBA player, currently playing for the Boston Celtics. He’s jovial demeanor certainly helps with his popularity, but he is mostly popular for being one of the shortest players in the NBA at 5’9″. He has a massive vertical leap, however, and has won the NBA dunk championship 3 times, and has made many spectacular athletic plays during NBA games.

Since being the #1 pick in the NBA draft by the Washington Wizards in 2010, John Wall has had major expectations placed on him by the Wizards organization and by Wizards fans. So far, Wall has met all expectations. As a 20 year-old rookie, Wall was third youngest player to record a triple double in NBA history on November 10, 2010, and has also led the Wizards to a greatly improved record. Only the future knows how far Wall can lead the Wizards.

Nicknamed “Melo”, Carmelo Anthony has been an popular and skilled basketball player his entire career in the NBA. Anthony played one year of college ball at Syracuse University, leading the Orangemen to their first NCAA championship in 2003 as a freshman. He then entered the NBA draft, and was selected at #3 by the Denver Nuggets. Since joining the Nuggets Anthony has been an All-Star four times, All-NBA four times, and has led the Nuggets to the playoffs every year.

Amare Stoudemire was taken as the #9 pick of the 2002 draft by the Phoenix Suns, and was the only high school player taken in the draft that year. It ended up being an excellent pick, as Stoudemire won the NBA Rookie of the Year Award in 2003 and has made six appearances in the NBA All-Star Game. Possessing a rare combination of size and athletic ability, Stoudemire has the quickness to score against players his size or larger, but can easily over power players small that him.

Kevin Garnett is one of the most well-known players in the NBA, having been in the league since being drafted out of high school by the Minnesota Timberwolves in 1995. He was the first player drafted out of high school since 1975, and ushered in an era of high school players moving straight to the NBA. While playing for the Timberwolves Garnett became a dominant force in the NBA, but he was never able to lead them to an NBA Championship. He was ultimately traded to the Boston Celtics, and won an NBA Championship in his first year with the Celtics in 2008.

Dwight Howard was the #1 pick of the 2005 NBA Draft by the Orlando Magic straight out of high school, and immediately made an impact for the Magic, average 12.0 points and 10.0 rebounds his rookie year as an 18 year-old. Since that time Howard has collected many NBA awards and accolades, including two Defensive Player of the Year awards, several All-Star appearances, and records for rebound and block rates. All that’s left for Howard is the ultimate in Playoff success.

As the first pick in the 2008 NBA Draft, Derrick Rose had a mountain of pressure placed squarely on his shoulders, both as the #1 pick and by playing for the Chicago Bulls. The Bulls have been looked for their next superstar ever since Michael Jordan left, and Derrick Rose has not disappointed. Rose won the Rookie of the Year award in his first year, and since his rookie year he has been an all-star, FIBA World Champion, and now looks set to start winning in the playoffs for the Bulls.

Since being drafted as the #4 pick in the 2008 NBA Draft by the Seattle SuperSonics, Russell Westbrook has improved every year to the point he is now one of the best point guards in the NBA, alongside Chris Paul, Deron Williams and Rajon Rondo. As athletic as any small guard in the league, Westbrook can do it all – score, rebound, and dish the rock on a dime. The sky is the limit for Russell Westbrook!

Some players never come back from severe knee injuries, Blake Griffin came back with a vengeance. And he’s taking out his vengeance on everyone else in the NBA. A highlight reel waiting to happen, no player in the league has more highlight reel dunks than Griffin, which is amazing especially considering that he plays for the lowly Los Angeles Clippers. Only the future knows if he can lead the Clippers to the playoffs, but he’s at least leading them to relevance.

Rajon Rondo has emerged as an electric, exciting point guard in the past few seasons, and seems poised to become one of the best players in the NBA.
